Significance: Mada carries an inverted Touch sense — the same mechanism that defines Zurn State. She is marked by what ZT society fears most. This is both her power and her curse.
Mada feels deep guilt for being sick, yet she revels in the adventure the sickness brings. The same force that marks her as an outcast is the source of her power and freedom. This is the central emotional conflict she lives with every day.
Mada was out night gazing with her parents. A strange snow began to fall, followed by the reddening of the sky. A storm appeared.
Driven by sheer curiosity — and guilt from an earlier disagreement with her mother — Mada broke away and ran into the storm. Inside it, she climbed an abandoned watchtower seeking a better vantage point. She became trapped with no way down.
In an attempt to free herself, she fell. Midair, a green bolt of lightning struck her. The same bolt passed through her mother mid-catch — her mother had positioned herself to break Mada's fall. The discharge turned her to grey soot.
Mada survived. The green lightning changed her. Years later, symptoms began manifesting — culminating in involuntary thunder jumps.
Zurn State is rare, unwanted, and used as government propaganda. First recorded in Edwin Zurn — blue eyes turned orange, black sclera, inverted irises. Mada's 33 Inverted Touch places her on a trajectory ZT society would panic over.
Self-Awareness Gap: Mada does NOT understand the deeper implications of her inverted soltra or Zurn Affinity. To her, she simply wakes up somewhere new when she falls asleep at home. She accepts the phenomenon without interrogating the philosophical or political meaning.
She is a living contradiction who doesn't know she is a contradiction.
Mother — The Artistic Dreamer
Had an artistic, dreamer sensibility. Lost her eyesight to sun sickness gradually — began when Mada was 2, clinically blind by age 10. Never complained. Relentlessly encouraged Mada's interests.
Influence: spontaneity, passion, pursuit of what matters. Photography is one Mada inherited — the encouragement to pursue what moves you, even when the world tells you not to.
Father — The Disciplined Challenger
Disciplined, challenge-positive mindset. His principles brought social pain — he didn't bend to make things easier. Never complained about his troubles. Imprisoned for standing by his principles when Mada's mother died.
Influence: Mada inherited his refusal to complain. She bears her sickness, guilt, and isolation silently — the way he did. She doesn't ask for pity because he never did.
Gifted by her mother before her death. Never leaves Mada's person — including into the NZT. Beyond documentation — it's a connection to her mother, the last physical object given with love before the strike. Represents the encouragement to pursue what matters, even when the world tells her not to.
Shooting Philosophy: (1) Always track sun position — light direction determines framing and exposure. (2) Bright-to-dark positioning — always position in bright sunny areas, shoot into shaded areas. (3) Traversal readiness — keep camera at the ready during movement. Moments pass. (4) Scan technique — military bottom-to-top, right-to-left. Energy Management: Appears lazy or slow to observers who don't know her. In reality, she's conserving — burning too much soltra causes involuntary sleep episodes. Observers misread resting state as apathy; truth is calculated restraint.
"Except When" Factors: Self-conscious about body — except when hunting. Loves night travels — except when day-life is crumbling under surveillance. What looks like contradiction is actually a window into who she really is.
The codeswitch signals when Mada is genuinely affected vs. performing composure. Observers who don't know Hanean miss this signal. Those who do read it as an honest tell.
Mada wants to be free of her storm sickness. She believes that finding the same type of storm that afflicted her will hold the key to answers.
